The Future of Wastewater Treatment: Energy, Hydrogen and Intelligent System Management

13 July 2026

Discover how CTS H2 combines advanced photovoltaics, intelligent energy management, hydrogen and oxygen recovery to make wastewater treatment plants more efficient, resilient and self-sufficient.

The real advantage does not come from a single technology, but from the way in which all components are integrated and managed.

This is the principle behind the solution developed by CTS H2 for the wastewater treatment sector: a proprietary system combining advanced photovoltaic technology, intelligent energy flow management, energy storage, high-efficiency electrolysis, oxygen recovery and the reconversion of hydrogen into electricity when energy is actually required.

CTS H2’s proprietary electrolysis technology is a strategic component of the overall architecture, but the system’s full value does not depend solely on the efficiency of an individual unit. The key difference lies in its ability to make the best possible use of the renewable energy available, adapting generation, consumption and storage to the treatment plant’s actual operating conditions.

Intelligent control determines when photovoltaic energy should be used directly, when it should be stored as electricity and when it should be converted into green hydrogen for medium- and long-term use. Hydrogen is therefore not produced as a standalone resource, but becomes part of a wider energy system designed to reduce waste, maximise self-consumption and improve operational continuity.

The oxygen generated through electrolysis can also be used in biological processes, advanced treatment systems and ozonation applications, while recoverable heat can further improve the plant’s overall efficiency.

The result is a modular and scalable platform that can support wastewater treatment plants on their journey towards greater energy independence, without necessarily requiring an immediate or radical transformation of the existing infrastructure.
On 18 June 2026, during a workshop held at the Best Western Hotel Verona, CTS H2, GPG Hydraulic Systems and De Nora Water Technologies Italy demonstrated to operators, engineers and designers how this integrated approach can provide a practical response to the sector’s emerging requirements: lower energy costs, continuity of service, water quality, resilience and sustainability.

CTS H2 and GPG are already assessing a number of potential projects in which energy, water treatment and hydrogen are considered as interconnected elements of a single system.

CTS H2 combines advanced photovoltaic technology, intelligent control, proprietary electrolysis, energy storage and oxygen recovery to make wastewater treatment plants more efficient, self-sufficient and sustainable.

The question is no longer whether these technologies can be used in wastewater treatment plants.
The real question is how much value remains untapped in a plant designed and operated according to traditional principles.
